We hear a lot about competitiveness these days. Of course we want European businesses to succeed. Other countries have put in place policies that favour their own companies, and that’s not fair. But green policies are not to blame.
In fact, the European Green Deal was introduced precisely as an economic growth strategy.
It stimulates investment in green technologies, research, and innovation.
It promotes an efficient, circular economy by reducing waste, reusing materials, and extending product lifecycles.
It’s projected to create millions of “green jobs” across sectors, from renewable energy installation and maintenance to circular economy businesses and sustainable construction.
And by accelerating the shift to renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency, it will reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels, enhancing our energy security (and saving us a LOT of money). Dismantling the Green Deal now will only damage our competitiveness.
What’s more, those responsible for attacking it are now calling for us to outsource climate action to third countries, basically paying others to do our homework for us.
We’re talking about investing billions and billions of Euros outside Europe, instead of investing that money in decarbonising our own economy… basically investing in being outcompeted by others in the next decades.
But what do I know? I’m just an MEP.
Let’s ask the countless companies, investors, financial institutions, service providers, economists, national federations and trade associations who have written to the European Commission, asking it to protect these important rules.
They are clear: pursuing a net-zero economy will make us richer and is despereately needed to be able to compete with China and the US. And we won’t have to destroy the planet while doing so.
